Schriftsteller George Orwell (1903-1950) das Schreckensbild eines menschenverachtenden totalitären Staates, in dem das
Individuum totaler
Überwachung unterliegt und selbst bis in intimste Bereiche verwaltet und beherrscht wird. (Die Jahreszahl »1984« wurde zu einer Art Symbolzahl für das Schreckensbild eines solchen Staates.) An der Spitze des Staatsapparates steht ein fiktiver Parteiführer, der »Große Bruder« (englisch:
Big Brother), dessen Bild allgegenwärtig ist und mit seinen Augen jedem überallhin zu folgen scheint (»Der Große Bruder beobachtet dich«, englisch:
Big Brother is watching you). Der
Ausdruck »der große Bruder« ist dann zur
Metapher für eine allmächtige, alle und alles überwachende
Staatsgewalt geworden. Er wird gelegentlich aber auch scherzhaft verwendet, wenn man ausdrücken will, dass eine höhere Stelle, ein größerer, mächtigerer Partner seine Augen überall hat und man stets unter
Beobachtung ist.
